The third prong located further from the wire itself serves as ground and neutral wire. On a range cord plug, the third prong is flat-shaped just like the first two prongs. However, on a dryer cord plug, the third plug prong is bent at the center at a right angle to form an L shape.

A 4-wire range cord is safe to use than a 3-wire range cord because most range accessories such as timers, fans, and electronic displays work at about 110 or 120 volts and need fewer amps compared to the heating elements. The seldom-used current moves back to the primary circuit box through the neutral wire. Given that the ground and neutral wire are attached to the range chassis, the surface area of the range will conduct electricity.  You will, therefore, suffer severe shock when you touch both the spigot and the range as you will act as a current path to the ground.

However, this is not the case with a dryer cord. The dryer cord is safe to use because the neutral and ground wire is not connected to the dryer chassis.
